Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of the SEO Knowledge Bomb podcast! I'm your host Paul and today I had the pleasure of interviewing Moon Hussain, an experienced SEO expert and founder of Affiliate Phoenix. Moon shared so many valuable insights on ranking websites, building successful affiliate sites, and leveraging SEO to generate income online.

I'll start by recapping how Moon first got into SEO back in 2008. She was working as a programmer but quickly realized it wasn't the right fit. With extra time at work, she started researching how to make money online and discovered the world of blogging, affiliate marketing and SEO. She launched her own blogs using WordPress and was hooked.

When asked what fascinated her about SEO, Moon talked about craving freedom from the 9 to 5 life. She also found SEO to be a good mix of technical work with the creativity of blogging and content creation. Moon emphasized that SEO has provided an incredible lifestyle and income potential that our ancestors could have never imagined.

Now let's get into some of Moon's SEO knowledge bombs!

On ranking on page one of Google, Moon emphasized having a solid keyword strategy, creating unique and comprehensive content, optimizing on-page SEO, and building authority over time. She said Google wants to see expertise, experience and legitimacy.

For affiliate sites specifically, Moon recommends having a solid about page with real images of authors and their credentials. This helps establish E-A-T (expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness).

When doing keyword research, Moon suggests targeting long tail keywords without much competition. These are easier to rank for compared to short, high traffic keywords. She uses tools like Semrush and Ahrefs to find keywords with low difficulty scores.

I also asked Moon about backlink strategies. She prefers focusing on amazing on-page SEO first, then earning links naturally as her content ranks. She advises staying away from paid backlink networks that often deliver low-quality links. Instead, build links like a legitimate business using PR, guest posts, etc.

Moon also dove deep into internal linking best practices. She varies anchor text, limits keyword-rich links, and creates tiered linking structures. But she cautioned not to over-optimize internal links since that can get you penalized, like in the infamous Google update of 2019.

In terms of monetizing SEO sites, Moon starts with affiliate promotions as the easiest method. Then she suggested exploring display ads, sponsored posts, online courses, and even merchandising physical products depending on your niche.

I found Moon's advice on content strategy very insightful. She emphasized thinking about your reader's experience over aggressively promoting affiliate products. Moon builds her email list and social media channels to attract followers, then markets to them without being overly promotional.

Finally, for anyone wanting to become an SEO professional, Moon suggests getting hands-on experience by starting your own blogs and sites. Learn by doing! She also recommended working at an SEO agency and leveraging free tools and education from Moz, Ahrefs, Semrush and others.
