Hey everyone! I'm back with another jam-packed episode of the SEO Knowledge Bomb podcast. Today I had the privilege of chatting with Randy Rohde, founder and CEO of 38 Digital Market.
Randy is an absolute legend when it comes to dominating search engines and leveraging the power of press releases for SEO. He shared so many invaluable nuggets of wisdom that I just had to recap all the highlights for you.
Let's start from the beginning - Randy first got into SEO waaay back in 2008 when he launched a website for his education company. He started dabbling in paid search to drive some leads, and that kicked off his journey into the world of search engine optimization.
A few years later, Randy was doing SEO for some of his friends' businesses on the side. And by 2016, he decided to go all in and launch 38 Digital Market, a full-service SEO and press release agency.
When I asked Randy what he loves about SEO, he compared it to a competitive sport like baseball. He loves strategizing to knock each campaign out of the park and overcome competitors in the SERPs. I'm right there with him - the problem solving and competitive nature of SEO definitely gets my gears turning too!
In terms of learning SEO, Randy picked up tips from OG experts like Craig Campbell back in the day. And he still follows icons like Kyle Roof, Matt Diggity, Holly Stark, and past guests of this very show!
Randy emphasized the importance of always being a student - read books, join masterminds, and never be afraid to ask questions. That's advice I try to live by everyday.
Okay, now let's dive into the meaty stuff - SEO press releases!
Randy explained that in today's world of AI content creation, establishing brand voice and authority through high-quality human-written content is more important than ever. Press releases allow you to get your brand mentioned on authoritative news sites, which helps build awareness and rankings.
So what makes for an effective press release? Randy outlined the key components:
- A compelling, SEO-optimized headline with your brand name and keywords
- An engaging intro hook to capture attention
- Informative body content with quotes, stats, facts - anything to provide value
- Contact information for citations
- An "about" section to promote your brand
When considering press release topics and angles, Randy said tying it back to your core brand keywords and services is crucial. Conduct keyword research to identify terms you want to target.
While press releases themselves aren't meant to rank, they allow you to associate branded anchors and optimized content with your site. This helps build relevance and funnel link equity.
Randy uses tier one links from big publishers like AP News, Business Insider, and Benzinga as anchors to provide support. Give your top-tier links some love with tier two and three links so they stand strong.
To distribute press releases at scale, Randy built custom newsroom infrastructure and partnered directly with networks. Compelling headlines and intro content improves pick-up rate.
After publishing, give your press release links TLC with tiered linking to keep them ranking high for as long as possible. The more links and love you can get to your press releases, the longer the publishers will keep them live.
Looking ahead, Randy sees press releases becoming even more vital for brand visibility as AI content grows. By consistently having authoritative sites mention your brand in quality content, you can build mindshare and search presence.
Whew...that was a LOT of value from Randy! If you want to connect with him and 38 Digital Market, you can find them on social media at @RandyTheNewsGuy and @38DigitalMarket.
I hope these highlights from my chat with the press release master get your creative juices flowing for your next campaign! Let me know if you give any of these tactics a try.
Until next time, keep your SEO game strong!
