I had an awesome chat recently with Terry Samuels on my show where he shared a ton of invaluable SEO expertise. Terry has been in the digital marketing game for over 12 years now and runs a company called Salterra Digital Web Services. He's a regular speaker at major SEO conferences like SEO Spring Training and SEO Mastery Summit. Terry is considered a leading authority when it comes to technical on-page optimization and other advanced SEO strategies. So I was really excited to pick his brain!

Key Takeaway #1 - Ranking on Page 1 of Google

One of the first things I asked Terry was how he gets his clients ranking on that coveted first page of Google. He emphasized the critical importance of publishing lots of high-quality, intent-based content. The key is then interlinking these content assets to build authority and develop "silos" around topics that all support each other. For example, if you're targeting "dog training", you'd want to create comprehensive content around things like puppy obedience classes, private dog training sessions, dog training supplies and equipment, and more. And link that content together so Google understands the structure. That's the secret sauce for climbing up the SERP!

Key Takeaway #2 - Press Release Stacking for Backlinks

I found Terry's press release stacking technique for acquiring backlinks completely fascinating. Here's how it works:

First, he'll publish an on-site blog post relevant to the client's business. Next, he creates a Google Doc version of a press release and links back to that on-site blog post.

His first paid press release distribution then links to those two assets.

For the second press release, he links to the top assets from the first press release.

And on the third release, he links to the best and most powerful assets from the second press release.

By methodically stacking press releases in this fashion, Terry can gain literally hundreds of referring domains and high-quality backlinks, all for around $600-800 in distribution costs. Such a brilliant tactic!

Key Takeaway #3 - Leveraging Google Docs and Google Stacks

Terry shared some sneaky ways to tap into Google's own tools for backlink opportunities. For instance, he recommends creating a public Google Doc sitemap and then building links to it to help get new pages indexed faster. His philosophy is anything with Google's powerful branding is prime SEO real estate.

He also utilizes Google's various apps and assets for easy link building stacks. Things like Google Slides, Google Calendar, Google News publications, and more.

The key is stacking and interlinking these Google assets and then linking to them from other sites and content to score high value branding links.

Key Takeaway #4 – Website Content Siloing

Terry does something called "content siloing" on client websites to optimize both user experience and SEO. Siloing refers to carefully structuring your website content and internal linking to direct visitors (and bots!) where you want them to go.

For example, Terry's website separates web design content into its own siloed section. That way visitors focused on web design stay and consume that content, without getting distracted by unrelated content.

Keeping a website's content silos separated leads to much clearer user journeys, improved on-site SEO authority, and higher rankings.

Key Takeaway #5 – Leveraging AI for Content Ideation

I found it fascinating that Terry uses AI tools like ChatGPT for early content research and ideation. While he cautions against using AI for final published copy, he finds it extremely helpful for generating content titles, descriptions, and clustering related keywords and topics.

His process is to use ChatGPT for initial ideation and then thoroughly vet and expand on the AI's output before creating authoritative, high-quality content. Definitely an interesting modern twist on the creative process!

Terry's Tips for SEO Success

To wrap up our conversation, I asked Terry to leave the audience with his best tips for SEO success. Here are a few gems he shared:

  • Keep testing and learning what works. SEO changes all the time.
  • Don't take client money until you've mastered the SEO basics.
  • Ongoing education is critical - attend conferences, find mentors, join masterminds.
  • Develop your own website to test theories and truly understand how to optimize sites.
  • Focus on creating the absolute best user experience - that's what Google wants to see.
  • Do high-quality, original on-page optimization before expecting backlinks to work.

Conclusion

I learned so much from my chat with Terry and hope these key takeaways are helpful for anyone looking to step up their SEO game!
